How To: Make a Philly cheese steak sandwich

Make a Philly cheese steak sandwich

Make the American classic Philly Cheese steak at home! This video will show you how to cut the proper piece of meat and goes from there so that you have a truly fantastic and practically gourmet Philly Cheese steak sandwich. You can't go wrong with this recipe.

Step 1

Purchase quality sandwich or hoagie rolls at an Italian deli or bakery. To make a great Philly Cheese Steak, you'll need fresh, crispy bread. Use good quality cheese and meat, too. All of this will make a difference in the taste and texture of your cheese steak.

Step 2

Sauté one chopped sweet onion in olive oil, 2 tablespoons of butter and crushed, black pepper. Cook in a large pan on high heat until the onions caramelize.

Step 3

Use one package of sliced steak/beef to make the cheese steak. Start adding the slices of beef one at a time into the pan. As the beef cooks, mash it up into smaller pieces.

Step 4

Add two cloves of crushed garlic into the pan, another dash of black pepper and 1/4 teaspoon of kosher salt. Using a spatula, work the steak into smaller bits and cook until fully done and mixed well with the onions and garlic.

Step 5

Lower the heat to medium and add a cup 1/2 of shredded, mild cheddar cheese into the pan. Mix the cheese so that it combines with the other ingredients. Lower the heat and continue stirring the mixture until the cheese has fully melted and mixed good with the steak.

Step 6

Spoon the steak mixture into the hero or hoagie rolls, and add a little more shredded cheese on top of them. Serve your cheese steaks with beer and potato chips.

Secret from someone that worked as a teen in a Philly cheese steak shop. You are missing the Philly italian spice mix most places use.

salt, garlic, pepper, basil, oregano, rosemary, thyme and marjoram

Be very generous with it while cooking the meat, and use some more some for garnish on the final sandwich.
